On Building a Closet of Classics with Mallory Goldman

Earlier this year, we were devastated to learn that our friend Mallory Goldman and her family were one of the many who tragically lost their home in the LA fires. In time, Mallory took to social media, on her thoughtfully and earnestly penned Substack, “Catching Up,” to candidly share the shock and grieving process that came with this unimaginable loss. Worth noting, too, Mallory and her husband Ben were navigating first-time parenthood with then seven-month-old Shep in tow. They took refuge first at her parents’ home before heading down to Newport Beach for a few weeks, where they started to uncover a newfound sense of routine.

As she begins this new chapter, Mallory generously invited us over to her new home in Brentwood, a place that she says is “even more special than we could have ever imagined” and we were thrilled to capture her and Shep in a sweet backyard photo shoot—no doubt, the first of many. We talked about the idea of rebuilding, both broadly in terms of one’s emotional sense of home, and the actual physical items inside it.

For Mallory, whose profession revolves around regularly sharing shopping finds with her 126,000 followers, with this loss has come the opportunity to rebuild her closet, piece by piece. “My wardrobe has always been a reflection of who I am—someone who prioritizes comfort, loves the classics, wants to feel confident and stylish, and isn’t afraid to have a little fun,” she says.  “When I lost my home in the Palisades fire, along with everything inside, I found myself asking what I truly needed to feel grounded again—and, eventually, to feel like myself again.”

Tell us a bit about your sense of style. How do you approach getting dressed?

I’d describe my style as effortless, yet intentional. As a Jersey girl who’s lived in Los Angeles for nearly 14 years, I’ve embraced the laid-back, casual vibe of LA while staying true to my East Coast roots. I gravitate toward timeless, versatile pieces, but I always style them in a way that feels fresh and current.

As a new mom, comfort and confidence are my top priorities, so I focus on putting together outfits that are both easy to wear and polished… In the warmer months, it’s ecru jeans, cotton sweaters, breezy dresses, and simple sandals.

“Over the past few months, I’ve had to rethink what basics really mean. Rebuilding from scratch has been an emotional journey, but it's also forced me to reflect on what truly makes a wardrobe feel special.”

What do you consider to be foundational to your everyday wardrobe?

My wardrobe is definitely built on basics, but over the past few months, I’ve had to rethink what basics really mean. Rebuilding from scratch has been an emotional journey, but it's also forced me to reflect on what truly makes a wardrobe feel special.

For me, it starts with well-fitting denim—whether it’s a great pair of straight or wide-leg jeans that go with everything. Simple, well-made T-shirts and button-downs are absolute essentials, as are cozy sweaters that layer perfectly under any lightweight outerwear. I also like to have a few key dresses in rotation: breezy midi and mini dresses, skirts, and linen pants for the warmer weather. While these pieces may not always be in the typical neutral palette you’d expect (I’m drawn to burgundy, stripes, eyelet, cable knits), they’re still incredibly versatile.
