We first met landscape architect and Vogue contributing editor Miranda Brooks last summer, when we traveled to the Cotswolds to shoot our Fall collection at Amanda Brooks’ farm. Alongside her daughters, Poppy and Violette Grey, Miranda set the scene for an afternoon picnic we hosted for a handful of our U.K. friends—complete with hand-designed wildflower bouquets, quilts from our Spring and Summer collections spread out amidst a sea of clovers, hay bales for guests to sit on, and a long table artfully arranged under a canopy of low-hanging branches. We were especially charmed to see our clothes come to life on Miranda and her daughters, who effortlessly mixed and matched our calicos and Fair Isle knits with their own wellies and vintage favorites.

Last month, we spent an afternoon on the rambling grounds of Miranda’s 17th-century Cotswolds farmhouse—where she, Poppy, Violette Grey, and their friend Lyra layered boudoir-inspired silks, cotton prints, and lofty knits from our Summer and Pre-Fall collections to suit the moody weather of the English countryside—and chatted about her approach to landscape design, her style philosophies, and, fittingly, her favorite things to plant as we transition from late summer to early fall.

Tell us a bit about your home garden. Does the way you approach landscape design professionally differ from how you think about designing your own outdoor spaces?

Like any landscape I work on, my own garden is first a response to the site. Feeling out where there is the strongest sense of place, the best light for different times of day, and how that sets the scene for the way we live outside. We live on an old dairy farm, which was heavily grazed. The biggest challenge here is how to shelter and settle the house from winds and animals, and how to create garden spaces. Connecting the house to its fields and agricultural buildings in a strong but simple way. We did a lot of work immediately, to get hedging and trees going. The more complex spaces are still to come, as we have learnt how we live here, and particularly how winter rain and mud affect things.

The views from where I brush my teeth show me the horses, [and the views from] where I practice yoga and meditate are strong and simple, but follow the chakras. Our kitchen views are again rather focused on animals, with a grass-level view into the hay field and the horses’ winter field, a view of a winding mown path that the ducks take to the canal in the morning, and finally an allee of espaliered pears leading to the sunset.

When it comes to getting dressed, do you have any style philosophies that you’ve passed down to your girls?

We have an “always pack a swimsuit” policy. Otherwise, they are in a very lucky position, as I have kept everything. All those tiny mini skirts and hot pants are back in use! Sartorially they are drawn to different things—Poppy likes to dress up and treasures things, so it's lovely to see my favorite old McQueen or Proenza back out, or the DÔEN knickerbockers and camisoles. [Violette] Grey loves a suit and is in old Mayle and Marc Jacobs, on occasion—otherwise it's pajamas.

I'm meanwhile down to a minimal farm wardrobe of old breeches.

Can you share a few of your favorite things to plant in late summer (to last through fall)?

Dahlias, followed by nerines. I'm also now growing a lot of different chrysanthemums in delicious colors—they last almost till Christmas.
